Ten Tec Century 21

What sometimes goes wrong with them is the final stage goes bad. The
final is a two-transistor push-pull subassembly that is mounted on the
heat sink on the back; it comes off as an entire unit by unsoldering a few
wires & removing a few screws. The one I bought, a spare final assembly
came with it, the former owner said it failed so often he decided to keep
a spare so he could stay on the air while the factory had the failed
final. (Don't know whether it really failed often, or whether he was just
a very serious operator, which he did seem to be.)

The other endemic problem is that the PTO mechanism suffers mechanical
wear when the machine gets old. Ten-Tec will sell you a rebuild kit for
something like $20; it'll take you a day's work somewhere with good light.
The Ten-Tec directions are considered by some to be sketchy, but another
ham put up the whole rebuild procedure, with many pictures, on the web.
