Need help identifying (tube?) function: Voycall A50
 

I'm trying to identify some (tubes?) I got in a old beat-up piece of
equipment, and I would appreciate any leads. They have an octal base, a
grey metal envelope about 2" high, and are heavy as lead. The
manufacturer is "Voycall", and they are labeled "A50"
Anyone have any idea what these are?

sounds like an OLD 'voice call' like ctcss, A50 can be digit code.

Probably relays (often supplied in tube sockets), and probably with
high-pressure nitrogen and maybe mercury-wetted contacts inside -- don't cut
one open to see :-)

Did anyone make transformers in that configuration?

I have a mercury-wetted relay by C.P. Clare that is close to your
description. The coil is pins 7 and 8 (600 ohms for 28 VDC),
the common contact is 3, normally closed is pin 5,
normally open is pin 1, and there's a jumper
between pins 2 and 4.

Even though it's a relay, the octal base says
"Licensed only to extent indicated on carton",
same as an octal tube.

In this case it is probably a frequency-dependant relay for a selective
calling system.

Did anyone make transformers in that configuration?

Yes! Altec did, as did lots of other folks.
