Look at some of the military gear out there. Fair Radio has a wide variety
of low-band VHF sets that will cover 6M. The PRC-25 is a personal favorite
but there are a lot of vehicle-mounted sets that are better performers and
cost less.

Only problem with Mil 6m gear is that its FM and wideband. You'll see a
fair number of Gonsets on Ebay... several there now via "everyone's
friend" and "trusted seller"....

It is indeed FM... sorry, I didn't see the "AM" part of that. But a lot
of it is narrowband, or can be adapted for reduced bandwidth without too
much work.

I like FM, though.

But someone may be looking for AM because they want to sample that, not
because they just want to get on six meters.

Traditionally, that military surplus FM equipment for six meters
would get converted to AM, at least for receive, up until the point where FM
took off on the band, at which point there were all those articles about
modifying six meter AM ham transceivers for FM.
