Galaxy V Panel Meter Calibration
Hi, Gang
I've recently picked up a 1966 vintage WRL Galaxy V transceiver - a nice rig, once you get over the fear of imminant electrocution (no cover over the 950V on the final tubes, not even a latch to hold the cabinet lid down.) It was obviously built to a price, but has held up well. The panel meter is only marked in S/Units, with a few marks labeled "tune" "Voice" and "cw". I hooked an external d.c. current source to the common cathodes of the final tubes, and ran a calibration check, since the manual didn't disclose what the panel meter marks represented. I held the small T/R relay closed by hand, so the panel meter would be set up to indicate cathode current. The "S 4-1/2" point (for SSB bias with no drive), is 60mA. The "tune" point is 200 mA. The "c.w." point is 380 mA. 73, Ed Knobloch |
