EICO 720 Transmitter.....Anyone ever use one of these??????
 

Hi Guys:


Yesterday I was fortunate enough to pick up a few more Boatanchors
for the collection.....Another RACAL RA-17 with ISB Converter, and an
EICO 720 Transmitter. The Transmitter is in Nice Condition both
Physically and Electrically...a Real Cool Looking little Rig!!
I do not have the Manual for this yet.....so don't know much about
it...except that it's supposed to be 90 Watts CW and AM????
Has anyone out there got one of these...or have you ever used one??? I
would appreciate any comments on the Rig either Good Bad or Ugly!!


Is it possible to hook a Microphone directly to the Rig??? I see there
is a Plug on the Back of the Transmitter that says "Modulator"......Do
I need something in between the Mic and the Transmitter...or can a
Mic just be wired to that plug and away we go???

you're missing the optional hi-level plate modulator. They show
on eBay occasionally in the 100 to 200 dollar range. It's bigger
than the basic 720 package, IIRC...

My memory wants to say it's the Eico 730.

The 720 has a good reputation.

No.

The 720, IIRC, is a CW-only rig when used by itself. It requires an external
modulator capable of about 45-50 watts of audio in order to run AM. Eico maded
the model 730 modulator to match the 720 transmitter, and provide
plate-modulated AM.

Hooking a microphone to the 720 modulator socket will simply destroy the
microphone.

Hi, Rob

The Eico 720 a nice c.w. transmitter. A connector is included
on the back for connection of an optional plate modulator.

A friend from my old radio club used one on 80m.
He was ten miles from me, and I could tell his TX by the slight
key clicks. The Eico has cathode keying, so beware
of simply plugging in a keyer unless it uses a relay output.

for Windows, I can fix you up.

The 720 was my first rig back in early '60's. It was a nice looking rig
and a good performer for many years. As others have mentioned it does
require an extenal plate modulator for phone operation. I still have its
other companiion piece, the Eico 735 VFO, acquired when I no longer had
to be crystal conrolled.
If you ever see the old "Andy Griffith Show" reruns, you will notice
that a 720 sits on the radio desk with a mike plugged into the key jack.
Never quite figured how that was supposed to keep Andy and Barney in
touch!

The companion modulator must be used for AM operation, the basic rig is just
CW.

The Eico 720 requires the Eico 730 Modulator for AM, and it will work better
if you also have the Eico 722 VFO. I my station I also use the Eico 717
electronic
keyer for CW work. I have the 723 transmitter and a separate 730 modulator
for it.

The manuals are available for all of the Eico ham equipment at the "Bama"
site.

You will definitely need a modulator to run AM with the unit. I also advise
not to
turn it on without a jumper between pins 4 and 6 on the rear octal socket.

The rigs are good low power AM/CW station equipment, and provide for
switching
115 VAC to drive a TR-relay out of the rear socket also. LP CW is great fun.

I use an EICO 720 nightly on 80 meters. I bought and built mine in the mid
1960s. Although I never get one phone I have used it on AM in years past and
know you can easily adapt most any ham modulator. The EICO 730 actually did
not get the audio reports as I did when I used an old WRL modulator. Good
rig. Key clicks on some, it never plagued me on mine but some were able to
clean them up just by placing a 0.01 capacitor between the key terminals.
