Hallicrafters on the Silver Screen

I know some list members follow boatanchors on the silver screen so here is a
new one... in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" there is a great close up
of a Halli S 20R but the speaker has been replaced with an oscilloscope CRT.
Whether the modification was physically done or added in by computer special
efx, I couldn't tell. 73 Mike KF6KXG

Yea saw that - that was when they were trying to DF the signal controlling
the flying robots attacking the base.

The use of the S-20R makes perfect sense as it's "art deco" look fits into
the style of the movie. Most of the movie looks like it came out of a 1930's
Pop Mechanics or Amazing Stories cover.

Also like the radio towers with the top "static ball" radiating radio waves.
Classic! Guess the tower was just to support that little radiating ball. HI

Radio played a big role in this movie but note "Television" or "picture by
radio" was never mentioned, which in the real "30's" was mentioned all the
time by Hugo.

Wish Hugo was alive today to see how boring the future actually turned out
to be. :^(

It had "Super Skyrider" on it. The oscilloscope trace was green and
not that clean. It looked really "correct".

I recall seeing a dual trace display too.

Also, there was the CW sequence near the end using a fold-out key.
It was too brief for me to tell what was happening but it looked
"real".

From what I understand there are no props or sets.
The entire movie was shot with the actors in front of
a green screen and everything else is digital.

According to what I read, everything was digital *except* objects which the
actors handled or manipulated...which would probably make that key 'real.'
Also, some of the 'set' pieces I saw in magazine and web coverage was
'real.' I used quotes there because the only parts which were real, were
the actual pieces the actors stood on or touched. Even those were later
textured and colored to appear real. For instance, in the scene where the
reporter character is clumsily climbing down off the airplane wing (the
carrier scene where she first meets the Angelina Jolie character), there was
about three feet of the wing that was a physical set...only it was smooth
and painted a flat grey. The rest was added in later.

Now all they've got to do is get the digital
images of the chartecters a little better
and they can save a bunch of money not
having to pay high price actors.

Anyone remember the movie from the 70's
called "Looker", this is part of what it
was about.
