I have both the Sam's and Hallicrafters service information for my S-40A,
and the dial cord diagram on each was wrong for my radio. I had to cross
the dial cord at the bandspread cap to get the tuning knob, the bandspread
dial and tuning knob to get into agreement. I say it was incorrect for my
radio, because it looked like the diagram would have been correct if the
bandspread dial were calibrated in the opposite direction. Anyway, I can be
more specific if the original poster runs into the same problem.

You might try http://www.theoldradiofixerupperguy....al%20cord.html
Find your radio on the index HERE, then click on the number showing your
particular stringing guide.

Maybe the existance of incorrect Halli manuals explains why an SX-25 that I
once had, worekd fine but the BS dial worked backwards! Someone followed the
manual too closely :-)

I have another SX-25 now whose dial reads correctly, so it wasn't just a quirk
of that radio -- I think we'd all know aobut it if it was! --Mike K.

=============================================

I had to cross the cords in my S-40A too. The instructions in the
manual were wrong for my radio. In my S-40A, the bandspread capacitor
plates turn clockwise to increase capacity, in my S-40B the plates
turn counterclockwise for increasing capacity. So the S-40A and S-40B
are reversed! I don't have a S-40 so I don't know where it fits in.
Just string the cord so the bandspread capacitor increases capacity as
the dial moves from 0 towards 100.

I agree with this and maybe it was Frank who helped me out with mine.
All of the available data seemed to be incorrect and crossing the BS
cord was required on my set.

If the BS dial just reads 0--100, you can string it either way.
On my SX-11 (a real antique!), the dial reads 100 at *minimum* capacitance, the
top of the band. My Super-Pro 400 seems to be the same way.

True, the antique 3-dial BC sets used 100 for fully meshed capacitors, and 0
for wide open. So, whatever floats your boat (anchor).

Since the SX-25 has calibrated bandspread bands, I know that one was backwards!

The bandspread dial also reads "set to zero for normal tuning" twice. There
are also some arrows indicating which way zero is.
