I'd say you can sub a 2N324 or a 2N526 in there without any real change.
These aren't specified for input or output capacitance so if this is
part of a tuned circuit it may require some tinkering to make it happy
with an equivalent.

If it's an audio circuit, I'd just drop in a generic Ge equivalent with
a high enough dissipation and be done with it. Or even drop a silicon
device in there and change the bias resistors.

I do have 2N-404 Texas Instruments (NOS) transistors, which, in
according to my my transistor manual, can be used as direct
replacement for 2N591. I also have one transitor from International
Rectifier TR 05-C which is also can be used instead of 2N591.
