Help: Collins 51S-1 No rx on 1 band

Help: Collins 51S-1 No rx on 1 band
Hi
I just received a MINT Collins 51S-1
and I tried all bands on receive and all work great
except the AM broadcast band 77 ABC etc.
All other bands are fine?
Can someone tell me where to look for the problem?
I haven't taken it out of the case yet.
Thanks very much......Rich

I see this quite often.. Lots of people use these comm receivers for BC
listning..Quite often lightning will zapp the BC band RF input
transformer.. If that is the case, it can usually be rewound and
repaired. You might test it by connecting an antenna through a 200 pf
or so capacitor between ant and RF amp grid pin..If it receives ok then
you need to look at input circuit.. GL W4PQW

This a 2 to 30MHz receiver................there is no RF preselection below
2MHz.

Hi,

Collins sold the accessory model 55G-1 low frequency tuner
in order for the 55S-1 receiver to be used below 2mc.

The 55G-1 uses a single FET, and works on two bands,
200 to 600kc and 600kc to 2mc.
It came in a cabinet which matches
the style of the 55S-1. A small speaker is included.
The 55G-1 is pretty rare, and may cost almost as much
as the receiver, depending on condition.

If your receiver is totally dead below 2 mc
(i.e., you can't even hear the 100 kc calibrator),
V10A or V16A may be bad. (Both are 6EA8 tube sections).

If the previous owner used the 51S-1 receiver
with a 55G-1 tuner, he would have cut the internal
link between J13 and J14 (RCA connectors on the back panel
of the 51S-1). Try plugging in a patch cord
between J13 and J14 and see if that helps.
