The 4 batteries are in series in a cambric (sp?) tube. There's room for a
number of mods that I could do to get 6 volts but I thought I might be able
to keep it original, its in very nice shape with all accessories. If I
could find a junker or another cambric tube I might be able to install 4
standard D cells.

then it may be possible to assemble a cluster of 4 AA Alkaline cells to
fit in that space. They would have a capacity not unlike four 1/2D
carbon-zinc cells.
