I have a nice working SX-101 receiver that I would like to refinish. Does
anyone know if there is after market Hallicrafters paint available?

There used to be a guy who sold paint for Hammarlund and (I think) some
Hallicrafters radios, but I believe he disappeared from the Internet a few
years ago.

If you take your cabinet to an auto paint supplier (not an auto parts
store), they should be able to do a computer color match and mix up paint to
match. If you have a sprayer, they'll give it to you in a quart can. If not,
they can make up spray can(s) for you. I believe it cost twenty-some bucks
the last time I did this, and one spray can was more than enough to do a
cabinet.

In practice, there may not be a single "correct" color for a given model.
There could have been different paint runs that were not strictly identical.
The Hallicrafters SX-28 front panel is an example. Some of them are "reely
reely dark grey," others look pure black. When I took in one SX-28 panel for
a color match, they did a test drip on the back of the panel to doublecheck
the color and wrote "midnight black" next to it. Duh. I could have saved a
few bucks by picking up a can of black Rustoleum at the hardware store.

In any case, if you computer-match what's on your cabinet, then you have
matched the color they were using in the factory on that day :-)

The poor man's solution is to take your cabinet to the local auto parts
store and pick out a spray can with the closest color (assuming there's a
reasonable match). If it looks right to you, it'll probably look right to
everyone else.

You might as well paint it metal flake orange with green
pin striping because nothing you can do with a repaint
that isn't going to scream "I'VE BEEN REPAINTED".
A repainted BA is WORTHLESS ! ! !
Except maybe to take the chassis out and use it in
an original cabinet.

But what is the condition of the radio now? Perhaps in its "original"
condition, it is worthless, too. And perhaps worthless to you, but to
the restorer, maybe it becomes a thing of beauty and joy. Not
everything is tied to money. Remember that and you may get more
enjoyment out of the hobby!!!. That's my 2 cents worth.

Watch any episode on cable channels of the Overhaulin' on TLC (Chip Foose
creations) or
PowerBlock series on Spike --- any beauty and money are closely related.

That's right. And nobody is repainting pristine radios, anyway.

I do all my needed radios with matched paint. Sometimes its not cheap. For
instance, Hallicrafters SX-71 front panel and lower cabinet paint is $47.00
for a pint.

That's right. And nobody is repainting pristine radios, anyway.

I have always found an off the shelf paint that will match or come so
close for every Hallicrafters that I have ever restored. Look before
you spend your money you might be surprised. As someone stated
Hallicrafters never used the same shade of paint twice it seems.

A repainted BA is WORTHLESS ! ! !

Many cabinets (and their contents) can be saved from the dumpster by a
repaint.

Check out this Halli T-54 TV (companion to the SX-42 receiver).

Do you think that stripping & repainting the cabinet will make the entire
set worthless?

Tell that to someone with a hopelessly dented/twisted T-54 cabinet, or
someone with the electronically identical Halli 505 TV whose wooden cabinet
was smashed into pieces.

Anybody with average skills could start with this hopeless-looking cabinet
and make it look presentable in a day's work. Restoring the lettering would
take a little more time, but I think you get my point.

If you're hooked on the aged look, I can sell you a few bales of used #0000
steel wool, stinky/soiled refinishing cloths, and other materials that you
can rub onto your newly painted cabinet to make it look as "original" as you
like.

I did look an nothing came even close. I was doing a COMPLETE restoration on
this radio and wanted to do it as right as possible. Now all I have to do is
the white lettering using an ALPS printer and white lettering.

Hi Jim,
I've seen/heard most of the comments so far before. Here's my
solution, well tested by me and others. I have repainted several SX-101,
SX-115, and HT-32 cabinets, most needed it. They definitely looked much
better when done, and several other boatanchor guys have seen them and
agree they are a very good match to whatever was new. New varied by month
and year, so what it was 40-50 yrs ago is anyone's guess.
For the cabinet, I use Rustoleum V7777 Satin Black. It's great for
these units, and Drake 4-line cabinets.
For the perforated lid, I use Duplicolor Truck and Van Paint #T 229
Silver M. I think there may be a later no. now used for the same stuff,
and there is another mfgr with one almost as good, would have to search
for both no.s.
There are techniques for helping the finish come out best, drop me a
note & I'll dig up some info I've had luck with.
