"SatCon One"--Fake concerts in 1980

Anyone else remember this?

"SatCon One", a series of simulated concerts (regular studio pop music,

with added audience
sounds). played over the radio during a 12-hour period.

Supposedly, this was a concert originating from several cities in the
US, Canada, Australia, Europe
and Russia. For example, the first two hours or so would "originate"
from LA, then the next hour
from San Francisco, then New York and so on. Of course, dramatic tension

(and a small bit
of Cold War commentary?) was provided by having "difficulties" receiving

the Moscow portion
of the "transmission" until the very end, when they got through. (Lots
of Billy Joel from "Moscow",
if I remember correctly..."

I have bits and pieces of it on tape....

This was a 48 hour program, which means it went for 2 whole days-probably w
ith exceptions for Sunday morning religious and public affairs programs-but
I heard parts of the program the weekend it aired on WBVF 105.7 FM on the
last weekend before Halloween. Little did we imagine that 5 years later, w
e'd be watching "Live Aid" on MTV and ABC, as well as a syndicated hook up.
SatCon One was ahead of its time; 5 years later, it became reality.

Obligatory comment, you are posting to a thread from 14 years ago.

My comment:

I don't see why you called this "ahead of its time", it seems to be a
lite-rock version of Fantasy Park, which was in 1975, 5 years prior.

Basically the same idea, fake a live concert using studio and live tracks
with new audience sounds. Run it a couple days in segments.

The big ending to Fantasy Park was a reunion for the Beatles.

It's best known for being hosted by Rod Sterling, who died the month before.
Somewhat ruined the "live" aspect of the whole thing, but as they say, the
show much go on.
