We sure have come a long way from the concept of about 80 years ago, when the
government figured that 15-20 high-powered AM stations (back when AM was all
there was) would be all the broadcasting that the US would need.

Kinda omits the commercial shortwave broadcast stations, don't it?

That's about 4,000 to many for adequate coverage of the U.S. with high-quality
signals.
