St. Louis: P-D commentary on radio
A very funny article in today's St Louis Post-Dispatch -- and one
that will get the Conventional Wisdom Crowd's underwear all in a knot -- as one of the P-D's columnists, Daniel Finney, listens to local (FM) radio for a week and writes of his impressions. URL (line break after ReadForm&): http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/ema...opup?ReadForm& db=stltoday%5Centertainment%5Cstories.nsf&docid=ED 50E24E4273457686256DFA0052CF90 Highlights (fair use excerpts): About country station KSD-FM: "One of the DJs let loose a pretty loud belch after shilling for McDonald's. Already, I can hear what I've been missing the past half-decade." Of heritage rocker KSHE: "Along comes another commercial for mortgage refinancing. I begin to wish I had a house to refinance. The station returns to "Bob and Tom." Ah, it's good to be in touch with this local programming. I mean, it's not like I could hear a syndicated show from Indianapolis on the air in Des Moines." Of AC KYKY: "A series of unremarkable soft songs played in a row until Blues Traveler's "Run Around." KYKY, like seemingly every other station, is giving away $10,000. I think about ways to spend the money - mostly on new albums so I won't have to wait for commercial radio to play a song I even kind of want to listen to." Regarding modern-rock KPNT: "I'm told this is the station all the hip, young people are listening to. It sounds more like the station the marketing people want you to think all the kids listen to." Finally, on KDHX: "Of course, the next day, I tune in to hear Serbian pop music and lose all my interest. Still, I've got to admire a station that tries to be all things to all people. There's got to be room for a place with a mix that eclectic." Interestingly, no AM stations were covered in Finney's column (not even KMOX). -- "Right here in Minnesota!" "Bullwinkle, that's Florida!" "Well, if they're gonna keep adding states all the time, they can't expect me to keep up!" -- Rocky & Bullwinkle, episode 5, 1960 |
