Realaudio to MP3 converter?

Does anyone know a program that can convert Realaudio files (.ra, .ram or
streaming) to mp3?
I would be thankful for an answer.

Why would you want to do this? It first defeats the whole purpose of
realaudio, and secondly (and more seriously) layers two lossy compression
systems on top of one another for more nasty artifacts.

The program is Streambox Ripper. I believe it's no longer available from
Streambox because of legality challenges from Real. But unsupported copies are
around the web. Alternatively, you'd play the file in RealOne, or preferably
the Real browser plugin, while using an MP3 encoding program that captures from
your sound card mixer.

And of course the reasons to do this a

1) Real's tight control over its proprietary format
2) An unwillingness to harbor on your PC Real's obnoxious, buggy, maddening and
intrusive RealOne software.
3) A desire to enjoy the content on the tens of millions of MP3 or MP3/WMA
devices out there that don't support the Real encoding, such as car CD's,
headphone units, DVD players.

But that is the reason why the stuff was encoded with Real in the first
place, to prevent this from being done. Realaudio exists so that the
folks that created the file have control over how it is decoded.

If you don't like it, don't encode with Real.

You can, of course, use a differant program to record the sound while you
play in realaudio. This is a real-time conversion as the real audio plays.

I use a free program called Audacity, which has a plugin to convert wav to
MP3 format.

The reason to get MP3 is, of course, is so that you can play the audio on a
device which doesn't handle wav or realaudio.

CBC, for example, makes Quirks & Quarks available for download in .ra form.
They happen to make it available in Mp3 and Ogg as well. Of course they don't
want you redistributing this program, but the mere act of encoding in .ra isn't
evidence the content provider doesn't want you to listen on the device of your
choice.

There is quite a bit of .ra on the web that can be streamed but not
downloaded, and I do accept that the content provider doesn't want you storing
that stuff. But I'm pretty sure common law will allow you to record it to your
VCR, let's say, for personal use.

Try www.totalrecorder.com. It has a trial version and you can
register for $12. It takes what you hear and makes it an MP3.

RealAudio exists to make money for its manufacturer. I believe they
couldn't care less about the security of the material their customers
create. It's proprietary. Ya gotta pay them.

An excellent idea.

I will also avoid it as much as possible. The software is full of bugs and
installing it is a RealPain!
In one installation it caused multiple corruptions of the registry. It took a
number of tries before it finally took.
At another station they desire to have CoolEdit Pro as their default player on
the studio computers. RealOne always, on its own, modifies the file
associations so *it* is the default player. Does anyone have any solutions for
that one?
