For all practical purposes all of WTOP's secondary service area is in the
Atlantic.

Will the test also take place on the other WTOP frequency of 820 kHz?

WTOP-AM 15 comes in great in New York City...but who up here
cares about traffic on the Beltway? :-)

Well, since WTOP will be running its regular all-news format, which is
simulcasted 24/7 on 820 and 107.7/Warrenton, VA, I guess so :)

But I don't think they're going to do anything special with the 820 or
107.7 transmitter power/direction/etc.

Did WTOP have to get a special temporary authority to use daytime
power/pattern for this?

If not, what portion of the rules grants the authority to do so in the
middle of the night. "Experimental time?"

Ted.

I bet if they go to daytime pattern in the evening, the folks in London
and San Francisco will also know when 495 is blocked at the 355 exit.
It'll be really interesting to see.

I actually like listening to WTOP on my way up the coast. I tune to WINS
next, and then to WBZ, so I get the traffic reports all the way up.

Another DXer asked me that same question; I asked the person that said
they'd run the test if that were the case, and I have yet to have heard
back. But if they're simucast, I'd imagine it will - but I know nothing
about the pattern on the 820 station.

I listen to them up here in the Boston area whenever the ionosphere is
co-operative. IMHO, they have the best sounding audio on the AM dial.
Very clean high-end, notably free of IM - almost sound like FM. Anyone
know what they are using for processing? ---- and they don't play
"songs"!

Ask the question on the "mailbag" section of DCRTV.com . WTOP people read
and post regularly.

I visited their transmitter a few years ago. The modulation monitor needle
just stuck in the region near 100% - yet I agree they sound good. Shows
what you can do if you only have voice to deal with - and a good engineering
staff.
