Which version of Stagger Lee?
Which version of Stagger Lee? If my memory is correct, Stagger Lee by Lloyd
Price in January 1959 was the Number One Single in Billboard Magazine and there were two versions (KFWB in L.A. played the one with the word GAMBLING in it; on American Bandstand, Dick Clark played a version without the word GAMBLING in it for the National Audience.) Can anyone verify that there were two versions of Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price? thanks. peace, ted alvy |

Subject: Which version of Stagger Lee? From: Fred Povey ess Newsgroups: rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s The biggest controversy over Lloyd Price's original version of "Stagger Lee" is that Billy gets shot. In the remake, he doesn't. The remake is often referred to as "the 'American Bandstand' version," which partly answers your other question. Can't tell you about which version KFWB played. -end- thanks fred. peace, ted alvy |

Can anyone verify that there were two versions of Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price? Could well have been a local cut job. I know very well that when Brown-Eyed Girl came out, our station PD spent an hour or so carefully removing "Making love in the green grass behind the stadium" and replacing it with another line, with razor blade on 1/4". This is the version we aired. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

If you're interested, get a hold of a book on African-American
folklore and check out the "The Legend of Stack-o-Lee," from which the Lloyd Price hit was adapted. Evan |
