getting song name from radio

Awhile back I heard they had devices you could hold up to your car
radio that would extract the song name / artist and display it on the
hand held device.

I wanted to find out if this device actually exists and where I might
find one.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

You're referring to a technology called RDS (radio data service), in
which an RDS-equipped station (not all are) can transmit data to an
RDS-enabled receiver (again, not all are). Precicely what data is
transmitted would be up to the station management, but it can certainly
be program-specific information.

I'm not aware of any proximity devices that would display the RDS info.
It's conceivable though. A radio receiver could be equipped with,
perhaps, BlueTooth technology, which could make it possible to send the
info to a BlueTooth cell phone, for instance.
