XM Satellite Radio going online

XM Satellite Radio is going online -- with a $7.99/month premium
Internet radio service, scheduled to launch next month. The service will
offer most of the same programming that's broadcast via the company's
satellite.

Existing subscribers to the radio service will have to pony up another
$3.99/month to get the Internet service.

Also, although it hasn't been posted on the corporate Web site yet, word on
the generally reliable fan site xmfan.com is that XM will be returning at
least one of the channels it has dropped over the past year as an
Internet-only offering. The channel being mentioned is Special X, whose
format was generally described as "weirdness" -- polkas, William Shatner
singing, old Mrs. Miller records, foreign language stuff that sounds
"bizarre, man" to you average stoner college sophomore. XM dropped it back
in February, saying its surveys showed a negligible audience. Apparently, XM
now sees that negligible audience as a potential ... well, not cash cow,
more of a cash heifer, devoted fans who'll pay to hear what they once got as
part of their basic subscription.
