98.5 Duplicate
If there are any radcio listeners here in Kalamazoo listening.
Can someone tell me what the deal is with WNWN 98.5 broadcasting on 95.5 as well as it's regular frequency? I discovered this while searching the FM band this morning. I thought at first that it was the radio that I was using but when I turned on my large stereo system and punched in the duplicate frequency I found the same station on the big radio as well. So what's the deal? Is it my radios or are they going to put a new station in the 95.5 spot? TIA Robert |

I never had a problem hearing WNWN-FM in downtown Kalamazoo in the car, but it might be necessary to help penetration into some buildings. There is no way that they could put a full power station on 95.5. Charlie -- To respond by Email remove never- from address |

The numbers in the call letters mean it's a "translator" station, authorized to rebroadcast the signals of some other station (in this case WNWN) but not to originate programs of its own. Apparently WNWN doesn't feel their 98.5 transmitter has a strong enough signal in some parts of the Portage area. -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |

Is it my radios or are they going to put a new station in the 95.5 spot? They can't. W238AL can only rebroadcast a full power station. In this case, it gives a better signal to the Kalamazoo area than the 98.5 main station. |

Is this, perhaps, to preempt the possibility of a LPFM? Y'know, I've wondered about that... We have a couple of cases where Nashville stations have filed for translators at sites well within their city-grade contour and where no apparent terrain obstruction exists. -- Doug Smith W9WI Pleasant View (Nashville), TN EM66 http://www.w9wi.com |

Is this, perhaps, to preempt the possibility of a LPFM? Not even close. First adjacent WBXX (class A) around 20 miles away would prevent that. |

They can put up a 175 watt translator, but not a 100 watt LPFM. Charlie -- To respond by Email remove never- from address |
