Default Podcasting vs satellite radio

By Tim Wood
10 June 2005

Satellite radio uptake is booming thanks to portable receivers and
aggressive content segmentation.

I think they're in for a tough time though as sales of MP3 players continue
to soar. More important is the convergence of music players with cell phones
which are becoming increasingly more useful as more software and functions
are packed into them.

Podcasting is superior to satellite radio because it builds on the core idea
that has made Apple's iPod and iMusic so successful - people prefer to
compile their own programming and then consume it when it is convenient.

The ability to compile and arrange is improving all the time and eventually
it will be relatively easy to establish a profile that collates MP3s and
delivers them to your communications device.

If I was a satellite radio exec, I'd be spending a fortune making a cell
phone that is capable of receiving my programming.
