WTWP, more listening

Most of the interviews are not with newsmakers, but are interviews
with Washington Post reporters, columnists, and other media (e.g. TV
reporters, spokespersons, former spokespersons...) personalities "in"
the news industry. This isn't all bad, and other radio news (even NPR)
is often talking about the media reporting the news rather than those
making the news. But it seems an unnecssary level of indirection: why
interview a reporter about his article, rather than talk about the
subject more directly?

Well first, you have to consider that the reporter is most likely getting
very little to nothing for appearing on the radio except promotion of the
reporter's skills. Second, until WTWP is established, newsmakers aren't
going to be willing to submit to long interviews for the most part unless
their votes or power base arises in the DC area but a politician is quite
likely to want to be interviewed by a Washington Post Reporter. Third and
most important of all, the reporter can mostly discuss what the reporter
learned rather than more details. It's quite likely that the reporter put
all of the relevant facts in the article and all you're really asking for
is a rehash of the newspaper article, which makes for even more boring
radio than interviewing the reporter.
