So, I blew up the frontend on my radio. Opened it up, can't see any
visible damage. When you blow up the radio, any idea what normally goes
on it? The huge honking amp transistor looked fine, and I'll try to
replace that when I can find a boatanchor with a spair, but I'm just

I had previously been testing my radio with a 1.7 SWR on my new
antenna. My radio just dropped all the power, and stopped transmitting
for a while, and then a few minutes later, it started working again,
but I just put out unintelligible noise, although at full power
according to my meter (external).

And no, i wasn't unintelligible cuz i was drunk, I'm pretty sure i was
sober at the time ;)

is easy enough to come across. Oscilliscope, no.

Funny that I don't have personal access to test equipment, I work in
one of the most state of the art RF labs in the world with equipment
galore, but I couldn't sneak in anything to test on. Nor does anyone
know a darn about my plight.

The radio AFAIK did work fine for a while. So I don't think this is
entirely a mod. It doesn't look modified,

Funny, I couldn't TX yesterday until i toggled the PA switch (i mashed
a bunch of other buttons, but this one finally did it). Although the
radio wasn't in PA mode.

I was just asking on here so that someone could kinda point me in the
right direction to look at.

I'm using the stock uniden mike. It's a dynamic microphone. I put it on
my Cobra, and listened to the audio quality, and it was fine. I haven't
had luck getting my cobra mic working on this uniden however :( , but
the audio quality is the same with both mic's. I took it apart, and I'm
not sure if someone fiddled with it, a wire was twisted together, but
poking around didn't change anything.

What mods are present on this radio? As far as I know, it's stock. I
bought it used about a month ago from a trucker who stopped trucking.

Well... it could be many things in the audio chain. Probably the most
likely is the audio output device. Not sure exactly what that is in
your rig... but most take the form of a IC that is normally attached to
the aluminum chassis to sink the heat away.

CB radios are disposable, just throw it away and buy another one, or try
stamp collecting.

If a trucker owned it then it's hard telling how bad it's messed up.
CB radios are cheap, just go buy yourself a new one. Or buy a bunch of
used radios and go through them until you find one that works.

If you bought it used from a trucker it probably has been screwdrivered. You
need to take it to a competent tech and have it checked out.
