Radio transmissions into metal building

I am a consultant for an AVL (automatic vehicle location system)
system used by the Southeastern counties of Michigan. The system is
used on winter maintenance vehicles and works on 900 MHz. The
vehicles are often stored overnight in metal buildings where it is
difficult to obtain transceiver communication from the AVL system. Is
there a low cost (possibly passive) way to port 900 MHz radio
transmissions into these buildings?

Thanks,

Eric Anderson

Yes, mobile phone companies use such devices.

I always thought a communications consultant was in knowledge in the field
of communications, maybe he needs to work for Mc Donald's.
Lets see, if their last location was just outside of the building before
they drove inside lets say they must still be there.

You assume that the information that the vehicle had was all
transmitted before it went into the building. What if it was not?

Then there is somthing wrong.
Fix the radio, if its broke then even inside of the building it would not
do any good.

Eric, assuming this is a genuine post...

It sounds to me like you have blagged a job with false
qualifications.

You don't say whether your job is to come up with a design
or simply identify an existing product that fills the need.
Also, you don't say whether signals are going from the vans,
to them or both ways. This makes a real difference.

I would not expect a consultant to go begging for help from
strangers. Did you know that these messages are available
to anyone and could be until the end of time. This includes
your boss, any future employers and anyone wanting information
for nefarious purposes.

If you are to aquire, then search through known reliable sources
for comms equipment. If you can find nothing to suit, maybe you
could privately email some of the companies to ask if they have
anything of that nature. If they do, could they send you the
data/specifications.

If you don't know reliable sources, how to identify suitable
products or how to design something for the job, then maybe
you are in the wrong job.

Regards,
Peter.

Yes. A large window facing the transmitter. Otherwise some form of
omnidirectional antenna outside connected to an antenna inside via a
trransmission line. Not very efficient but cheap and works if the
outside signal has enough power density.
