Wideband mobile antenna suggestions?
I got some good suggestions for a mobile amp, thanks to all who answered
in honest help. The next puzzle piece is a wide-band mobile antenna. I'm primarily interested in operating in the freeband region. Coverage of the upper end of the 11m band would be desirable too. I don't want a giant 9 foot whip screwed to the bumper or one of those mobile monsters that have a loading coil made out of coiled copper water pipe stuck on the roof either. I was thinking about something along the lines of a 4 foot firestick. I would assume it would handle the 500 watt amp OK. What about two antennas, each one tuned to cover a part of the range with some overlap, and a coax switch under the dash to switch between them if one won't work? Anybody use a setup like this? I use a KW-7 FireStik for 10 & 11 meters. Yes, it's seven feet tall, but I talk where ever I hear on both bands. -Scott/AE |

You get a sample of his crap here where he "goes off" offering to meet people for a fist fight, and he's admitted as much here, showing up at people's homes. Who needs that kind of **** transpiring on their front yard? I'm registered to a PO box. Now you know why. (not because of Steveo) then you would know that a loaded antenna has a higher Q and therefore a lower bandwidth than a quarter wave whip. I use a KW-7 FireStik for 10 & 11 meters. Yes, it's seven feet tall, but I talk where ever I hear on both bands. Thanks for your opinion. I was looking for something shorter. The tall antenna would scrape the garage door up when I pull in. Also parking decks are a problem too. A few hams I know warned me about life with a big antenna on the truck. That's why I was thinking about something smaller even if it means a bit of a compromise in performance. You could try a Wilson 1000. Any time there is a coil, there is Q, and where there is Q, you have bandwidth issues. To reduce Q, resistance is added. A dummy load has no Q and an infinite bandwidth. It doesn't radiate very well. A resonant antenna is a natural amplifier. Ever sing in the shower? When you hit a resonance, it takes very little power for the rain room to sing back. Antennas do the same thing. ** I'm registered to a PO box. Now you know why. (not because of Steveo) I can't say I really blame you. You can't come here and ask a simple CB Radio related question without being attacked. Seems like some, and there is a big group of them here, have nothing better to do than post piles of trashy crap then try to blame it on somebody else. All you have to do is look at the huge number of posts directed against various posters and ask yourself the question: why are they doing the very same thing they cry about when they post a legitimate question or comment? The simple answer is they are part of the problem not the solution, they have no interest at all in cleaning up the news group, the more excuses they have to post their trash the better they like it. If they don't have an excuse they just make one up. Whether you choose to believe it or not but Steveo is behind 50+ percent of the trash posted, his group of buddies do the rest. I've talked to several people who know about him locally here and he has nothing better to do except get drunk and his entertainment is seeing how much trash he can get away with posting and not get called on. Well thanks once again. At least there is one person, you, who is more
interested in CB Radio topics than seeing who can out do their buddies posting trash. I went to a hamfest today and picked up a 40 meter hamstick. I put my screwdriver antenna back on for 80 meters. Now it won't tune. I get a 4:1 SWR, even when I take a clip lead to the feedpoint. My 20 and 40 meter hamsticks are tuned for the center of the extra/advanced portions. I think it's a bad ground on the screwdriver. As I was monkeying around with the clip leads, the SWR did go down to 2 and 1.5 for moments so there is hope...My KW-7 still measures good at 28.370...lost a set screw in my 144/440 antenna...so much to do and so little time. Sunspots will return...someday. We had a dozen today! My signal stalking scanner was fun at the hamfest. They walk by and key up and my PRO-84 gives them feedback or echo. One guy using FRS had the funniest look on his face when it happened to him!!! Caught another guy trying out 10 meter FM on 29.200. One hamfest, the sponsors were using 440 ham frequencies to do their business. One was hooked to the PA. If I wanted to figure out their PL tone... |

I don't want a giant 9 foot whip screwed to the bumper or one of those mobile monsters that have a loading coil made out of coiled copper water pipe stuck on the roof either. MeatSack...---... Skywarn-NTS If you're a ham as your "NTS" would indicate, Not really but I do know a few. I may get my Tech ticket at some point. What keeps me from getting a license is having to put up with nut cases like Steveo. I didn't care for the comments I hear about him from the guys in the radio club. The last thing I need is having the drunkard showing up at my house causing trouble in front of the wife and kids. You get a sample of his crap here where he "goes off" offering to meet people for a fist fight, and he's admitted as much here, showing up at people's homes. Who needs that kind of **** transpiring on their front yard? then you would know that a loaded antenna has a higher Q and therefore a lower bandwidth than a quarter wave whip. MeatSack...---...
