WA7PRC, you are absolutely correct that the design is based on the
Analog Devices SSM2166 chip. I'm curious about your soldering
comment.
Why do you feel the soldering is poor? We have not had a single
failure due to poor soldering.

It is not unusual for poor soldering to take more than a year to show
up, with the products then turning up in large numbers. Poor soldering
may show up quicker on heavy components, such as transformers.

It is difficult to be sure of just how good solder joints are from those photos,
but they sure look like they were hand soldered by someone with a special
deal on bulk solder.

We have approximately 400 units in the field at this time.

Are they not getting a bit muddy out there?

The field failure is around 0.2% during the one
year period that these units have been on the market.

So they get past the guarantee period, you can relax. Time will tell
if they are reliable in the long term.

Peter.
