Will it blow your modem, even if the phone line is NOT connected to it?

Will it make your answering machine act like it is on drugs?

Will it short out a caller ID box?

Will it cause an OPEN in in 1 line of a 4 conductor phone wire?

Will it losen the ground clamp from the phone wire gnd to the electrical
wire GND ?

Any thoughts from those who know?

well dave you have to ask yourself ........how many amperes of pure
current are in a lighning bolt..........

the answer to your question is: all depends.....how close the
'lightning strike' was to your residence........but it can do all the
things you have stated and much more......ask the hambos what happens
when their illegal towers get hit by lightning........

if the flow of electrons goes from negative to positive in the real
world........does lightning go from the ground up or the clouds to the
ground..????? that is the learning question for the pile
today.........

Be kind. To some people, english is a second language. Even if they were
born here......

What illegal towers? I hope you don't think amateurs are limited to 60 feet
or something. There are no 2 meter CB amps. My guess is that most amateurs
run 100 to 150 watts on HF and anywhere from 5 watts to perhaps 70 watts on
2 meters. That is *plenty* for worldwide communications on HF and
sufficient for a couple of hundred miles of continuous 24/7 coverage on 2
meters (depending upon mode/antenna etc.)

According to weather service, though the lightning is called "Cloud to
Ground" - it is from the ground UP.... As to what all would happen in a
strike, it depends.
Our home was directly hit once, the lightning went up under an awning, blew
out a porch light and went in that way. The CB and every thing else was ok..
The brand new TV set got smoked. So, go figure. I've never - even in my
repair business history - have ever heard of "everything" getting zapped. As
to HOW the items work or not after, depends on how it was affected, though
usually, they won't work at all, if in through a "power" supply. While some
folks feel a set struck by lightning is usually non repairable, that is not
always true. I've seen, heard AND repaired sets or devices that were hit by
lighting with great success.
So, a lighting hit is not always a killer for electronics. I've seen as much
if not more damage done by power surges from Electrical Lines as I have with
lightning.
So, YOU decide which is more damaging..... Actually, I"d bet Electrical
surges are a better bet for probability, as you're always connected.
However, due to our experience from the lightning strike of days gone by,
when a storm is approaching, EVERYTHING in my home except the light bulbs,
furnace, refrigerator is unplugged. The phone is left plugged in to the
phone jack, but modems are unplugged from the computers. The only other
lightning strike I sustained which was not a direct hit, was a preamp on a
2meter repeater receiver got burned out. The receiver was ok. The
transmitter and all else checked out ok. Though my answers are not definite
by any means, these are just my experiences and knowledge of the subject.
