Default Setup SWR & Antenna

Got a SWR meter and trying to test the radio, do as instructions from web,
set switch, adjust to cal mark, change switch etc, no matter what I do it's
no where near 1:1 always over in the red still?? WTF? Could it be the radio,
purchased off EBay and of course it was new!

swr meter is for testing the antenna when connected to the radio
try changing to another antenna - or do some tuning on the one you're using
The swr meter goes in line between the radio and antenna -
Radio --coax-- SWR meter -- coax-----antenna

Hello Jim:

What type antenna installation do you have? The more you describe it the
more we can help.

1:1 can never be achieved, but you can get close. Anything under 2:1 is
useable.
Maybe your meter is not working correctly? If possible, check your coax with an
ohm meter. Center to center, shield to shield, center to shield.
Is your coax the 50 ohm type? 75 ohm coax will work but a 50 ohm meter will not
read correctly.
Good Luck

I bought a magnetic antenna with about 12' of cable. The instructions on the
antenna say move to channel 1 and that you might move the antenna up/down
1/8" to achieve something near 1, but nothing.

Is the radio crap? I have bid on another magnetic antenna on ebay to see if
something is wrong with the RS one.

I also purchased another SWR meter and it reads pretty much the same as the
first one.

Before you scrap the radio or the antenna, try to borrow a dummy load.
That will take the antenna out of the picture and give you a better idea
of what is going on.

Most likely, taking the antenna out of the setup will give you good
readings. If that's the case, check the antenna connections and the
coax going to the antenna very carefully.

If you still get the same readings try changing the coaxial cables
connecting the radio to the SWR meter and then the one connecting
the SWR meter to the dummy load. If all this fails to give you good
results, then there might be something wrong with the radio.

On the internet, no one can hear you modulate.

It was fixed by a new cable between the SWR and radio. Now reads correctly
around 2 on channel 19. Thanks for all the hints and suggestions!
