New CB recomendations

I've just recently started in CB radio. My first radio was an old
Cobra 29 that bit the dust a couple of weeks ago (beyond repair.. long
story). So I'm in the market for a new CB. Money is tight, and I am
wanting to spend the majority of it on a good antenna (thinking a
Wilson 1000). That leaves me with a budget that can only handle the
smaller, cheeper CBs like the Cobra 19DX or the Midland 1001Z.

My question is if these small CBs are even worth it. Are they? I'm
only interested in bare-foot operation while on the road (no SSB) to
keep in touch with other drivers. Will theese serve that duty well?

Thanks in advance,
Jeramy

Uniden Pro510XL. I have had a few of them and they are good on receive and
transmit. No need for a power mic. They do benefit from a modulation
adjustment but that requires changing a resistor instead of turning a
potentiometer. Just don't let anyone talk you into removing the modulation
limiter because it will become muffled. I've seen these radios go on eBay
for $5. The older version of it, the PC33 is also a great radio.

I appreciate the uniden recomendations, but I ran into a great deal
and took it instead. An oldtimer was selling out some of his stuff at
a garadge sale and I picked up a few antennas there. That freed up
some cash to throw towards the radio, and at the same time a TA truck
stop had a sale on the Texas Ranger Freedom One (a TR-696F ssb mobile
with flag face place) for a little over $100. So I ran with it. Got
it installed and will be installing the antenna here in a few.

Thanks again!

Jeramy
