advice on a Galaxy dx 959

I just got a new in the box never used Galaxy dx 959.

Should keep it stock? or should I have some work done on it before I run it.

If i should modify it, what is the right way to go. and where is a good place
to take it. I dont know a think about the inside of a radio i would just like
to get the most out of it. This is replacing a stock Cobra 29
