Magnum 257 CP1 speech compressor
 

The current Magnum 257 has blue LED's and a built-in full-time speech
compressor.

Can anyone report on how well the compressor works? Does it sound
"processed"? How many dB's more do you get with it?

(1) I never said I had the radio; (2) Even if I had it, the questions
apply to ten meters as well as CB; (3) Even if I had the radio and was
using it on ten and 11 meters, it would be legal outside the USA; (4)
Even if I had the radio and modified it for 11 meters, no law would be
broken until I propagated a signal on 11 meters; (5) Even if I
modified the radio and propagated a signal on 11 meters, no law would
be broken if it were an emergency.

Anyway, the company seems to suck and provides no helpful technical
information -- probably because its customers are like you and are
only interested in putting the radio up their ass.

My original posting asked about the new full-time speech compressor,
dubbed the CP1. I want to find out:
(1) Whether it was only engaged for sideband
(2) How "processed" it made sideband TX sound
(3) How much of an inrease over normal did it provide, in dB if known
or in signal reports.

I asked Magnum these questions twice and twice got non-responsive
answer, probably from somone in Bangalore who never saw one.

I bought a "blue light" magnum 257 in December 2004. At the time it
was advertised as having a "top gun" modulator. Apparently this was
in error, 'cause the ad was quietly changed to "sp-1 compressor". I
decided to keep it anyway because it is a really pretty radio. It
also works very good. It is so simple to modify and tune up. Just
alittle research on the 'puter is all it took. I don't think the
compressor adds a whole lot. My magnum is mated to a kl500 linear
amplifier which puts out a full 300w am and it works flawlessly.
Don't spend more than $169. They are also quite compact, it's fits
nicely in my import car. You will like it.


I like to get on 10m and jam the **** out of those faggot ham op's.

Ken,

(1) I believe it's on all the time
(2) Not at all, just louder on average, sounds great on SSB
(3) Well, tough question, it will bring the average level up as it's mostly
compression, but as for seeing it on an S-meter I can't honestly answer.
