I used to get a mediocre match on my I-maxx, until I added a
counter-poise to it. The difference was dramatic. I cut 4 lengths of
14g wire to 9 ft, crimped a lug on it and attached it to the bottom
of my tri-pod. It brought it down from a 1.5:1 on 555 to a flat 1.1:1
from 26.285 to 27.999! Without touching the tuning rings, I could
make quite dramatic adjustments with the wires themselves. I tried
spreading out in 90* fashion, but my best result was when I braided
them together and dropped them as close to straight down as my roof
allowed.
