Illinois Ops....help a lady in distress (Hurricane Katrina)

This was on the Hurricane Katrina forum:

K DeStefano - Alton, IL
I am from Diamondhead, MS. I evacuated with my 3 children to my parents
home in Alton, IL. I have a finace and his family down there in
Diamondhead that rode out the storm. They need help with supplies. They
barely made it due to the water coming in the house and they had to flee
to the second floor. There are two elderly people with them and 4
teenage kid's and a5 other adults. Please let me know how I would have
access to a ham radio operator from here to Miss. my phone in Illinois
is 618-466-1392

I'm cross-posting this to rrap since there seems to be a bunch of
horn-tooting hammies there who think that ham radio has the emergency
comm thing all wrapped up. Obviously they dont:

knew that would be a waste of time.

Hi JJ.

You must have been abused by a CBer more than once. You can hardly post
with out referencing CB.

What's your call?

Notice she didn't ask how to have access to a cb operator. Smart lady,
knew that would be a waste of time.

I would say that his relatives would have to get the message out
themselves. It sounds like you know they survived already...
If they had a CB radio and battery power other CB'ers would
relay messages, radio conditions favoring. Ham radio in the
right band would be the same. Even little FRS family radio
service "walkie talkies" with a supply of batteries would
be worth a try, or how about a handmade or otherwise booster
antenna on a cellphone?

These are ways, but you have to be prepared in advance,
and survive the storm, and you have to want to communicate,
maybie theres no practical gain at this point than a quicker
rescue. Maybie the best thing is to leave the radio and
start hiking...

I haven't heard much on the CB since the disaster, Conditions
have been quiet in the NE US.
