Need help hooking PA horn up to CB
OK, so I have a Cobra DXIII CB installed in my truck.
http://techshop.earthlink.net/p20805:S1151622 It has always seemed to work fine in CB mode. I bought one of these PA horns to mount under the hood to use as a PA speaker. http://butleroutdoorstore.com/index....OD&ProdID=1433 Both the CB and the PA horn have the usual standard mini jacks on them. Trouble is, when I try to use it, all I get is a horrible piercing feedback whine when I press the mic. At first I thought there was something wrong with the speaker, but when I plug it into the external speaker jack of the CB, it works fine as an external speaker. It even worked when I plugged my Ipod headphone jack into it. So there can't be anything wrong with the speaker. So then I assumed it was my CB that was broke. My dad has the identical model CB, so I tried his out and it did the exact same thing. (terrible whine in PA mode) So either the Cobra DXIII doesn't work as a PA system, or I am missing something simple. I didn't have the speaker anywhere near the mic, so it's not like it was picking up feedback through that. Anyone ever hear of this happening? |

With the unit set to PA, turn the volume on the CB all the way down to nothing, and key the mike... Bet the squeal is gone... Now turn up the volume to just where is starts to squeal, then back it down just a little. That point is as loud as you will be able to get the PA... |

I should have mentioned in my original post that even with the volume turned all the way down to the lowest it will go (without shutting the CB off completely) it still produces the same exact whining noise at the same ear-piercing decibel level the instant I key the mic. The volume control doesn't seem to have any effect on it whatsoever. |

This is a long shot, but if you have a pair of headphones with the mini-plug, try plugging that into the PA jack on the radio. Key it and see if it still squeals. Keep the mike away from the headphones, and don't wear them! Might go deaf if it does squeal... :) Try adjusting with the volume with the headphones attached... One other thought... It is the stock mike? Power mikes don't work so well with PA systems... |

Interesting! Most likely there is way too much Mic gain.
Question? Why has it been since CB started, there is a PA on them anyway, no other radio, Ham ,Marine or Aircraft had it, oh yes that's funny a pilot talking over a PA system. DrDeath wrote: If you have a mic gain knob, turn it down. Unfortunately there is no gain knob. I asked a few other places and some other people thought I might be using a powered mic as well. That is not the case, as the only place to adjust the volume is right on the CB itself. I will try the earphone thing previously mentioned to see if I can eliminate the speaker as the culprit. A friend also has a higher quality Cobra CB, I will maybe just try the speaker with his to see if it has the same effect. Thanks guys. |

We were discussing that in another thread. Even on the cheapest units on the market they always have a PA setup. You would think they would want to save a few pennies per unit not to have it. But the switch comes in handy for many other things. |
