AX.25 version differences
 
Hey gang,

I'm sorry to revisit the subject, but I'll try once more.
What is the difference between versions 2.0 and 2.2 of
AX.25? So far, I haven't encountered much in my reading
of the two spec's. The only thing seems to be related
to the number of digipeaters you can use. Obviously, I'm
a novice packeteer and this subject is probably not worth
considering for most but if somone knows the answer I'd
be much obliged.

P.S. Hank, thank you for your response. Why do you think
I'd be better off using version 2.2?

Because it is the latest (and last) "official" specification.
Been a really long time since I looked at 2.0 vs. 2.2 and all
the other suggestions that were floating around at the time.

Work done since then has improved the protocol quite a bit,
but has not been submitted to the ARRL other than via the
conference procedings. So there is no "AX.25 L2V2.3"
or whatever. Many current implementations do the additions,
and those additions have proved to be quite useful.

For a very simple implementation you can just ignore digipeating :-)
i.e. if an incoming frame has digipeaters, ignore it.

You mentioned "students" working on this project, and I assumed
"Computer Science 101" students. If that assumption is wrong then
my suggestions would be along the lines of "find existing code, and
modify or use it." Perhaps if you give some more ideas on what
you are up to, others will post some suggestions.
