BPL

I came across an article on broadband over power lines (BPL) tests.

http://news.com.com/2100-1034_3-5163739.html

I found it reading Slashdot, to give credit where it is due.

My question is whether any hams in the test areas, Cincinnati, Ohio;
Allentown, Pa.; and Manassas, Va. have noted any interference or increase
in noise floors. If so, on what bands? There has been a fair amount of hue
and cry about this, but I have yet to see any reports of results from the
current trials.

If you want to do some really heavy reading, I have a copy of the TWG
report in full. 100 pages in PDF.

Let me know I'll put it up on the web.

Here in Manassas we have located a few above ground installations of BPL.
Our intent is to carefully measure radiation from the drops. At the present,
the system appears to be in a test mode and is not on all the time. When it
is on the noise wipes out effective HF communication for up to 100 feet
around the pole but this is just a tentative observation.

Several hams have applied for the service and received no response from the
provider.

See some photos of one installation at www.w4ovh.net

As we as aspiring _REAL_ Radio Hams communicate in
difficult circumstances without requiring BBC-quality 5 'n' 9
both ways, perhaps we should just take BPL in our stride?

Perhaps it will act as a filter to remove those who are
not _REAL_ Radio Hams but are just CBers-Masquerading-As-Radio-Hams
from the bands?
