Newbie Questions

Hello,

I have been using APRS for years to track my vehicles, but I would
really like to see more of what can be done on packet.

I have a setup that basically consists of a 2 meter HT/sound
card/computer combo. I have been using programs like UISS and am able
to see APRS traffic, and have verified that my packets are being
digipeated via APRS by looking on findu.com.

For my next step, I would like to connect to a BBS, but I have spent
hours online looking for local BBS's in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with
no success. What is the best way to find BBS's?

I would also like to get into long distance chatting with users by
making use of multiple digipeaters. How can this be accomplished?
What do I set my "To" and "Via" fields to?

Any information would be great!

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan

I dont know the physical location and frequencies of packet digis/nodes
in the DFW area. This will be your first step to establishing how
possible it is.

The "old" method of using a simple digipeat was to suffix your connect
command with the digis in sequence. eg

C K5YYY v K5DIF1 K5DIG2 K5DIG3

I am sure you can also send in "UI" unproto mode (non connect) but I
dont remember the syntax.

There are however a few different node systems available nowadays that
allow you to use a single destination command that remember how to get
there. These might be NETROM, ROSE, THENET and one or two others. You
may have to go through a number of iterations like connect to a node,
then connect to another "location" then to the end (human) device.

I guess however you already know this and simply need to know what
devices are available! I have used the node in Tyler once or twice but
that is probably out of your range. I dont as a rule keep packet running
at my QTH anymore. My interest tends to be soundcard digtial modes on
SSB (2M is also good for that)

I suggest you lookup club webpages for more details. If you draw a blank
get back to me and I'll have a search myself.
