Tech tracking Australian fires

The BBCs Digital Planet radio show reports on how WICEN, a volunteer
emergency communications service organization whose members are primarily
licensed amateur radio operators, is providing emergency communications
when mobile masts and internet connections are disrupted.

A related part of this report describes how one organization is measuring
air quality using low power LoRa networks. Hams arent doing this, but this
is certainly something hams could support.

Bowater Credit Union donates to Isaiah 117 House, McMinn County Amateur
Radio Club

CALHOUN (TN) – Bowater Credit Union members Joyce Johnson and Bill Luecken
have each won a $1,000 Pay It Forward prize for their favorite nonprofits
doing good in the five counties eligible for credit union membership,
Isaiah 117 House and McMinn County Amateur Radio Club (MCARC), respectively.



The McMinn County Amateur Radio Club “in addition to serving as a venue for
promoting amateur radio has a core value of community service and providing
emergency communication,â€� writes Luecken.Â* “As a testament to the critical
need provided for by these services is the fact that after the Nov. 30,
2016, tornado in Athens the MCARC emergency radio repeater network was the
only communication system capable of county wide communication.�

Ham Fest 2021 planned for Wadena


The Wadena Area Amateur Radio Club succeeded in doubling their attendance
at the recent third annual Arctic Blast Ham Fest event in Bertha, Jan. 11.



Looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year, the
organizers plan to host next years event in a larger venue in Wadena,
according to a news release from the club. The club hopes to bring out
enthusiasts from the region and reach out further to operators from Fargo
and Minneapolis.

QSLs: K3Y, WB4OFT

This isnt a QSL card from a recent QSO (although I have worked one or more
incarnations of K3Y, the special callsign used by the Straight Key Century
Club (SKCC). The reason Im posting this is that yesterday Paul KW1L, Rick
K8BMA, and I visited a Brownie troop and taught them all about Morse Code.
Paul had them build code practice oscillators and send their names to one
another. He also had me send them a message, and I was surprised how
readily the girls were able to pick up enough code to copy the slow message
that I sent them. At the end of the session, Paul gave a copy of this card
to each of the girls, showing them that Morse Code and ham radio is not
just for boys. We all had a great time.

I know that Im taking a little poetic license with this QSL, but I havent
worked a new station with a call sign that spells a word in a while, so Im
adding this one to my collection. Thanks, John!
