Question About DX Cluster
 

I've Telnet'ed into a DX cluster, entered my call and logged on. I was then
presented with a welcome message, some propagation info from WWV, some info
about setting filters and then the current date and time repeated
periodically. I never have seen a DX spot. Is this normal? Or perhaps
since it was my first time I have to be added to a table or something? or
validated? Maybe it was just slow last night.

What should one expect to see on a DX cluster via Telnet? Is it similar to
the OH2AQ site?

DX spots will appear if they are sent but during no activity you will have
to command the cluster such as

Once you are logged in type
sh/dx

get last 10 DX spots

type sh/dx/20

Get last 20 DX spots

Type sh/dx 14 (notice the space between dx and 14)
GET LAST 10 SPOTS ON 14 MHz
Or type sh/dx 20
Get same thing 20 = 20 Meters in this case

Type HELP for the cluster commands

Yes, this behaviour is completely normal. You're logged into the
cluster at this point, and you should also set your name and QTH, etc.
You can then set it to receive spots from only certain locations, and
much more.

For example, I have my connections configured to only show me spots
originating from the Eastern Seaboard, no further south than Kentucky,
no further west than about Ohio and up as far as Ontario. That way, I
don't get bombarded with spots from Europe, Florida or the West Coast,
where the propagation is completely different.

I'd recommend checking out VE7CC's cluster configuration tool. Go to
http://www.bcdxc.org/ve7cc/default.htm and download first the whole
package then the new EXE. It's pretty straightforward to install and
use once you get used to the interface.

Exactly what you're seeing. Then, as time rolls on, you should see
spots come in more or less in real time.

Yes, this behaviour is completely normal. You're logged into the
cluster at this point, and you should also set your name and QTH, etc.
You can then set it to receive spots from only certain locations, and
much more.

For example, I have my connections configured to only show me spots

In TELNET check your 'Configuration, Filters' from the menu. There is an
option to exclude certain frequency ranges, you can also exclude
non-north american spots etc.
