Gee folks all the posts today had nothing to do with
Amateur Radio DXing

CB doesn't belong here

For sale Items belong on rec.radio.swap

Shortwave stuff belongs on rec.radio.shortwave

I know this will do little good but please read the NG guidelines at URL:

I'll assume this last one was directed at me. I'll also assume that you
didn't bother to follow the entire thread, because otherwise your post today
makes little sense as regards myself. Maybe you ought to go back and read
it, or re-read it if I'm mistaken.

As it turns out, the unusual signal that I was getting in the MW band
(that's the part that you need to pay attention to) was an image or spurious
signal resulting from a SW band transmission, and was caused by an inferior
receiver. I didn't know that when I posted here, but thanks to in part Doug
Smith I now understand what's going on. If I had posted my "Why am I
receiving at 1615 MW?" question in the shortwave group, no doubt your
doppleganger over there would have jumped my ass for an off-topic post
since -clearly- it was a MW question. I can continue, if you'd like.

Oh yes, please do go on.
Was it a spur, was it the actual signal?
Have you heard it again? At what times?
Did you get station ID?
What were you hearing on 160 at the time?

Technically, the SWL question did belong over there.

It didn't seem so far away from topic as to justify not answering an
honest question from a newbie who might well not know the difference
between SWL DX and ham DX.

Only since you've asked so nicely, Hank.

Was it a spur, was it the actual signal?

Gee. I answered that question already. How'd you miss it? Being new, I'm
going to have to trust everyone that tells me that even though I received it
on MW that it was in actuality an SW transmission, and not the actual MW
after all, espacillay since what I'm being told makes sense. (Darn.) The
whole point of this thread is that I didn't knowingly make a post to an
inappropriate newsgroup. I believed that I was receiving an MW broadcast,
and so I came to the dx group to verify that. It turns out that I was wrong.
I didn't post my questions to the SW group because based on the evidence at
hand, -that- would have been an off-topic post. I generally try pretty hard
to follow netiquette.

Have you heard it again? At what times?

I heard it again the following night at 0650 UTC. It's about that time now,
and I'm not receiving anything on 1615.

Did you get station ID?

I'm afraid I didn't. As I pointed out, the signal faded before I could. You
must have missed that statement as well. ;/

In spite of the lack of an on-air ID I was able to tell that it was Gene
Scott based on several statements that he made, and some research on the
web.

What were you hearing on 160 at the time?

If you mean 1600 (remember, I'm new) I was probably receiving KVRI out of
Blaine. I don't recall specifically. I checked the band on either side of
1615, though, which is where I think you're heading. Whatever I found on
either side, it was different than what I heard on 1615. Otherwise, I
wouldn't have come here in the first place. I'm not -that- much of a newbie.
And let me thank you for the help you've offered me, Hank. You've made this
poor rookie feel right at home.

It was an honest mistake, and I'm pretty surprised (and dismayed) at the way
this dead horse is being beaten.

Digging deeper, though, I do think I see the cause of the problem since you
said "ham dx". ( I failed to notice the word ham in the thread title. Most
definitely my fault.) I didn't realize it was for hams...amateur dx sure
sounded appropriate for an MW DX question. The newsgroup name is a bit
misleading, IMO. I'm an amateur, and I'm trying to dx. g I'd have thought
that the name for a ham group would have been more specific, like
rec.radio.ham.dx. shrug If rec.radio.amateur.dx is just for -ham- comms,
then it would seem that there just isn't a group for MW DX questions, at
least carried by my news server. Saying that an MW post didn't belong in the
dx group but belonged over in the shortwave group threw me, especially since
I lurked here for awhile before posting, and saw numerous posts about dxing
in general. Go figure. Oh well...live and learn. So, mea culpa in spite of
IMO understandable mistakes. g

I'm sorry for the hassle, and I'll be sure to wipe the dust off of my shoes
as I leave.
