FT-817 CW Keying Question
I am trying to help a friend with his FT-817. He is trying to hook up
a keyer to the unit. The manual shows a picture of the proper hookup for a straight key/keyer and for a set of paddles, to use the internal keyer. The straight key/key hookup shows a 2-conductor plug and the paddle hookup shows a 3-conductor plug. All this makes sense and the keyer cable was wired to a 2-conductor cable. However, it doesn't work. The keyer keys other units just fine. But if you go to the instructions for enabling the CW mode it specifically says "3-conductor plug" in the section for a straight key/keyer. This conflicts with the hookup diagrams. Which one is correct? Should he be really using a 3-conductor plug for all hookups? If so, where should the wiring go? I have not had access to the FT-817 yet so I don't really know if my friend is setting it up correctly, but I am still curious about the discrepency in the instruction manual. It may be that he just didn't set it up right and this is a non-issue. Any help? Martin |
