If you're looking for used, give preference to radio's which have a Mutek
front-end build
in.

I prefer the Yaesu FT736-R (with Mutek) over many other radio's, however
this is personal.
Guess the fact that you don't often see them used is a sign?
If you want the very best look for something like a TS850+transverter
(SSB Electronics
LT2+ or DB6NT) but that will cost you.

To get into the VHF scene in Europe check into the ON4KST site at
www.on4kst.com/chat Lots
of info can be gotten there as well as real-time propagation and activity
info.

start too

Yes! I'm qrv approx 13:00 - 17:30 weekdays, and at random times over
the weekend.

I must get down the club station and put a few calls out then. Is it
still the norm to call CQ on .300 then QSY?

yes.

Tuesday evenings seem to be the most active.

Must depend on where you are. 144.200 is most often used in many areas.
Then qsy after a short time.

Charlie...If what you are looking for is a single band rig for 2, all you
have to decide is if you want it recent enough for computer control, or not,
and how much power you want to run.
You can get in for 300 bucks or so with old Kenwoods (TS700 series) or Icom
(IC251) or Yaesu (FT221)...If you move up to something like a more recent
IC275H, it will run you about double that amount...You get more power,
computer control, PL on FM...stuff like that. Some of the other rigs
mentioned like the Yaesu 726 and 736 are not 2 meter only rigs.
Another favorite of mine was the Yaesu FT225RD...problem with some of these
rigs is that they are now aproaching, or past 20 years old....you may well
end up with someone's problem rig. A really great multimode rig that is new
enough to have a tone board (option) and has a real hot receiver....and not
too expensive is the Kenwood TR751A. Although it is a smaller 12 volt
mobile rig....it has feet for desktop use...so would work out great!

I looking to buy a used all mode base rig for two metres at the end
of year and am leaning towards an Icom IC820H. I have looked at the
comments on eHam and it looks as if this rig is a favourite. I
wonder if anyone has/had one and if they have any comments to make
on the rig.

TIA,

Charlie.

PS:I realise that a real radio amateur would buy a tin of biscuits,
eat the biscuits and then build his own rig in the tin from a bag of
components bought at his club's junk sale but I don't eat biscuits.

I knew that's what you meant...

I've had a few old Icoms and had nothing but problems with dry solder
joints...I'm sticking with the FT-736R...outperforms my FT-847...

The ones that started the ball Rolling for Mutek were the FT-221R and
FT-225RD. I preferred my trusty IC-202S, but I never did figure where to
fit the Mutek board. Anybody on 2m SSB these days?

Well I am sticking with my old IC751. A Guy in Italy made a replacement
ramboard and sold em all over the world, what the board did was fix it
so it was impossible for the IC751 to loose its brain (operating system).
Mine did that and I lost most of the bands were lost, no way to restore
them. The Italian guy made a whole new board to replace the original
one so you could never loose the operating system itself, you would
only loose the 32 memories you had stored manually. These of course
could of course be reset one by one in a few mins.
