Why would anybody put a D104 on an amateur radio?

Why not?

That's what they were designed for. They vastly pre-date CB. They work well
with the old tube rigs (for which they were designed). I've used them with
everything from Collins and Drakes to Kenwoods and Icoms...why not???????

Why would anybody put a D104 on an amateur radio?

If it were able to be used as intended, it would allow me to talk without
having to be 2 inches from the mic, as is required with my Heil HM-10. Besides,
it's a neat microphone, but it's just collecting dust sitting on my shelf.

Well -- probably tens of thousands of Hams did well before CB and a lot
still do.
The mic has a rising response at the higher audio end for increased
intelligibility. Read Ham reviews at URL:

Because you can use the back of the chrome mic as a mirror
to see behind your rig to plug/unplug stuff !

Try talking across the mic not directly into it,
makes a nice difference.

Plus they look real retro !

Tube type...thats what they were designed for...Yes indeed, and very true.
BUT....the question from the CBer was concerning a FT100. Neither tube type
or a boatanchor.

So? I use a D-104 on my Icom 706...and with my old Kenwood 430 and with my
old Icom 735...they're neither tube-type nor boatanchor. Nor am I a CB'er.
What's wrong with that???

That's my favorite answer so far! :)

Of course there's only been one or two answers that actually answered the
original question, but I should expect that.

Andy... I have one on my 756Pro, and sold the Heil.
I also use one on several other rigs..both tube and solid state.
Used in tube-only rigs??? Someone's been living in a closet!!

Did you have to do anything special to the mic to get it to work?

Not a thing if you like high pitched, ear splitting audio.

It'll work, but its impedance may or may not match your Yaesu. You may
have to make a few mods to the mike. See the info at this guy's page:
