Have had some good luck with those I bought. I can't say the same for a
friend of mine. He bought a receiver kit. He put it together and it didn't work. He brought it to me and I checked all his work. It was fine. I did some testing. The thing was deaf. We even took it to yet a 3rd party for their opinion. Same as mine. My friend called the company and they wanted $70 I believe to test and repair. The damned thing only cost about $30 to start with. It was a piece of CRAP. G.W. "Ross Hockenberry" wrote in message ... Thoughts on Ramsey kits? |

I have built a few. I don't particularly like the order that they use to
insert the parts. I have built dozens of HeathKits and their way makes a lot more sense to me: put the shortest parts on first, then go to the taller ones. Ramsey tends to put all the parts in one area, making the board impossible to sit flat. But the few I built did run just fine. Bob M. ====== "Ross Hockenberry" wrote in message ... Don't know about Ramsey but do a search for North Coutry Radio, good
quality and run and owned by a ham. Ghost Writer wrote: Have had some good luck with those I bought. I can't say the same for a friend of mine. He bought a receiver kit. Thoughts on Ramsey kits? Of the ramsey kits I have assembled, I have to say I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed. Save your money. |

They are probably good kits for a yongster, to get them interested in radio, or find out how interested they are. But I won't buy any more of them for serious use. Bob McConnell N2SPP |

New to this discussion... Can anyone suggest other kit manufactures? Depends on what you want... I assume you're looking for ham radio stuff... For well designed, relatively inexpensive kits, try Small Wonder Labs... http://www.smallwonderlabs.com/ Really well engineered stuff, and Dave is a great guy. For high-end kits, Elecraft: http://www.elecraft.com/ Excellent design, quality, & performance but not cheap. Ten-tec still sells kits: http://www.tentec.com/Amateur.htm Many of the QRP clubs offer decent, inexpensive kits from time to time. I'm sure there are others... Any of these will likely be much better than something from Ramsey, altho probably a bit more expensive (but worth it in the long run)... No financial interest in any of the above, just passing along info... |
