Do a search. I just did one on Google for "MLA2500 Linear" and got quite a
few.
I have my dad's MLA 2500. Haven't used it yet. What I heard is that you
NEVER draw grid current. The tubes are easy to kill and very $$$. There is
a site with directions how to modify it for other less $ tubes:

http://www.svetlana.com/docs/TechBul...hnoteNo14.html

I even corresponded with the W6KT who wrote it. Here's a reference:

PS I have not done the mods to one yet because I keep finding good

im using an MLA now that will do 1800 really easy...I keep it at 1100 or

600

and figure it to last forever...73 Murray

The secret to keeping a MLA2500 alive and in good health is to make

sure your antenna stays in good condition and doesn't suddenly go

defective and unload the amp while it's on the air, and always monitor

the grid current while operating. Anytime you see grid current indicated

on the meter, STOP using the amp and investigate to see what went wrong.

Keeping the grids healthy is probably the most important single thing

you can do to keep the tubes in good shape. Those fragile grids won't

stand but a very few watts dissipation. Any visibile grid current while

operating on the air is too much, whatever the book says. When loaded

right (easily done) mine shows zero grid current at full output.

Mine 2500 still has the original tubes and they are still at full

output. I used it twice this week in a morning 75 meter group because of

rotten conditions. (I usually don't need an amp there.)

I am not smart enough to know how to remove the anti-spam. Also, I don't why
someone asking for information would not make it simple to get a helpful
reply. If I could have replied, I would have told them that the last, the
very last, used amplifier to be considered would be a Dentron 2500 A/B. They
were great amplifiers in their day, but used ones may have bad caps, and of
course, if the tubes are bad, they are impossible to find and when
available, one would cost more that your used Henry, Drake , Swan, Heathkit,
etc. amplifier.

As that amp has not been made in many years and not that many were sold I
would stay away from it mainly due to the tubes. Find an amp that uses some
common tubes that are sold at a more reasonable price.

Ok thanks everyone for their input ... I was under the impression that
the MLA-2500 was a well built amp, and easily modifiable to use less
expensive available tubes.
I'll do some further research.

I would not say it is easy , but I seem to remember that in a 73 Magazine
(maybe QST) there was an artical to modify it for one of the single Russian
power tubes. Doubt that I would go to that much trouble as there are many
of the Heathkit and other amps around that use a pair of the much more
rugged
4-400 and 3-500 type tubes.

Tubes are mighty hard to find and terribly expensive. And they are easy
to blow as well...but its a nice amp, be VERY carefull and you could do
fine. Youd be better off with an SB 220 in the same price category
though...OH I just happen to have one, check my webstie !!

Robert John January 29th 04 12:39 AM

I have one and it's an excellent amp. Will run a full KW with less then 50
watts of drive. Last summer I replaced the 6 electrolytic capacitors with 6
new ones order from Digi-key for about $30.00. I bought mine new and
wouldn't trade it for anything. Just make sure the 8875's tubes are OK
before investing big bucks.
