new low bander - used equipment suggestions

I've been in HAM hibernation for the past 20 yrs or so.
Last time I was on the low bands
was with a HT-40 + HQ-110 or TR4 -

If I wanted to look for a small used inexpensive low band rig
that could be used at home, in the car,
or with AC/12V power on Boy Scout campouts
any suggestions......
My challenge would be not having a great antenna...
just something tossed up at a Boy Scout outing
so my concern is antenna matching a hunk of wire :)

The rigs you could go with are too numerous to mention. But most
transistorized rigs do require a resonant antenna. For your "hunk of
wire" look at the MFJ antenna tuners, or for automatic antenna tuning,
the tuners from LDG or SGC. (there's web sites for all these guys)

You might want to take a look at the Kenwood TS50 for HF only use. Seems
like a rugged little radio, and I think it has been around for a while.
Check out the user reports at . http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/411
Also, when you get it narrowed down, try to download user manuals from the
manufacturer's sites.
