TenTec Omni VI Birdies and Digital Noise

I've had the OMNI VI for some time. The 10-meter band, especially, is plauged
with digital birdies and "chuffs" when tuned much like the Sony 2010. The
"chuffing" is up to an S5. In addition, there are many digital birdies
throughout the various ham bands that do NOT "dissappear" when an antenna is
connected.

I have talked with TenTec several times, and "that's the way that radio is."
For what it costs and is supposed to do, is there a "fix" for this problem?
Have others had the same or similar problems? If the new Orion has similar
problems, all the best receiver technology not withstanding, the radio is not
worth considering with this type of performance from TenTec!!!!!!

Suggestions???

Good TenTec zealots are supposed to look past such issues.

Dave, W0LEV;
Visit contesting.com and scroll down to Ten-Tec archives, then search
for Omni VI birdie fix.
Also visit qsl.net/n1eu web pages on Omni VI mods.
Altho I own an Omni VI Plus, I am not ready to jump to an Orion for
many reasons. The #564 performs all I need when operating at this
point.
