FT-90 Startup Insanity???
Hi,
My YL & I have Yaesu FT-90s in our cars. We have been more than satisfied with them except on cool mornings after they've sat out overnight unused for a day or two. Then either the display goes south and/or the rig refuses to xmit, or to recv (not necessarily all at once) until fiddled with (e.g., keyed up, tune knob twisted, cursed, et cetera) awhile. Once it works, it's good to go for the day. I've been told that Yaesus are afraid of the dark and to put a light bulb under them but that'd be a pain since they're mobile. Anybody know a solution? TIA, K3DWW |
I've got a solution... Throw away those FT-90 and get a good radio!
I looked at those for about 10 minutes, until I found all the horror stories about them. Sorry I don't have a constructive answer for you, but I felt the need to put in my $.02. -- 73! de Andy KC2SSB Beachwood, NJ USA! Grid FM29vw http://shorecogs.tripod.com AIM: shorecogs |

We have had two like that here in Chicago that do not work when cold.
Seems like either a lot issue or the radio is not designed for cold weather. Frank KG9H "Vito" wrote in message ... Hi, My YL & I have Yaesu FT-90s in our cars. om... Actually Andy is right...horrible radio! I had two of them, the first destroyed by fire ( regulator shorted inside it) Yaesu replaced the radio. Second one lasted 3 weeks and went dark (no fire). I tore that piece of crap out and replaced it with a Kenwood TM-G707A ($269) and VERY happy. The FT90R is a turd of a radio. Read all about them on www.eham.com if you don't veleive what you read here...Eddie The TM-G707A is what I use. I've owned 3 of them as a matter of fact. None of the broke, I just got rid of the other two at various times to try other radios, but I've gone back to the 707 in the car. |

Y'all need to work on reading comprehension when you get back from spring
break. There are better rigs than the FT-90, some even made by Yaesu, but they are TOO BIG! A TM-G707A is 1.6 inches wider, a half inch thicker and over 2 inches longer than a FT-90!! If space weren't a problem I'd opt for full power rigs like ICOM's IC-208H that offers a full 50 W on 70CM or one of YAESU's true dual banders, or whatever; but it is so ....
