Radio Shack HTX-202 low transmit power
 

Just over a year ago, during an event our club provides communications
for, my Radio Shack HTX-202 ht started intermittently transmitting at
low power even when set to "high". Since then it has gone to low
power all the time. This happens using battery or external power with
the whip or external antenna. The Google search revealed KB8ZCJ's fix
for his problem but I don't want to solder unnecessarily and am not
convinced that mine has the same malfunction as his did.

apparently, make the radio permanantly either high or low power. Any
recommendations on a switch replacement or a repair facility?

Update. I started to try the mod below. Get the switch cover off
about half way and decided to stop for fear of permanently damaging
the radio. Put it all back together. Works fine now. Full power
restored.

indicated that the PLL had failed to lock. I decided to open it up to
take a look, and while I was at it to perform a simple mod intended to
remove a birdie on 146.76.

When I got it open, I took a look, chickened out and carefully put it
back together again. It has worked perfectly ever since -- birdie and all.

I wonder what opening and closing the case has to do with fixing the
control circuitry/software in that little box.

In reality, that's a $50 radio. Sad to say, but it's true. They
are just a commodity - throw it out and buy a new one. Any
repair center is going to charge at least $65 an hour for
service. If you're not able to fix it yourself, it's really not
worth the cost to have it repaired.
