What's a good source for radio components?

Hello. I need a couple of components for a Realistic TRC-458. I checked with
Radio Shack and the parts are no longer available. Can anyone suggest a
source for these parts:

Item D401 (LED), Part #L-0776, Channel Display (TLR321)
Item PL401 (Lamp), Part #L-0786, S/RF Meter (11.73v @ 43mA)

Andy,

Try a CB repair shop. Any shop that does repair work will typically have a
"boneyard" of dead radios in their back room or storage shed. A good bet would
be a shop located at a truck stop on the interstate. When a trucker's CB
quits, they usually just buy a new one and abandon the old one at the shop.
Sometimes the dealers repair and re-sell them, but often they just toss 'em on
the pile.

Check the rec.radio.cb group..... that is a better bet! I have to look, I
"may" have a similar radio for parts, not sure. As the other poster said -
most shops have a bone yard of CBs. I do as well for CBs, VCRs and other
items, but can't remember all the radios tossed in. As far as buying some of
those parts new - though it may not be impossible - it can be tedious. There
are Smeters to be had - new - out there, but you have to make sure they'll
fit physically and so on. Not all are created equal. You may or may not be
able to get all parts in one place. In the case you can't, man those
shipping charges could rack up! And some places want minimum orders.
Hopefully, you can find a radio chassis to fit your needs. I'll look around
here to see what is here.

I can't recall at the moment what type of "Channel" display they used, I'm
thinking a small PC board with a dual display - perhaps a couple other
components and a flex circuit strip coming from it. IF it is "just" the dual
display, you should be able to get that. I don't know how you're fixed for
local sources. Some on here may have them. As for me, I'd have to check the
stock to see if I have any to fit the need (of those in stock) - once I
confirmed what was actually used. .

The other parts like the pilot lights and such shouldn't be too hard for
you to acquire. Even Rad Shack may have them in their bins in a store - or
something useable. They may have said those "part numbers" are no longer in
stock - but that isn't to say they may not be able to be substituted. Many
"sales" people that handle this sort of stuff don't know a diode from a
transistor either especially for subbing, so don't press your luck trying to

Suggestion: Look for a generic replacement for the LED display
(I'd wager it's just a seven-segment unit), and replace the pilot light
with a LED (use a super-bright if it's for a backlight, and a standard
one if it's just a front-panel pilot light).

less than $10, no biggie. The display flickers in and out. Might even be a
solder joint - never took the time to check, which I probably should have.

That last part kills me... Of course the computer couldn't tell them what is
compatible or not, it isn't taught electronics knowledge - nor programmed
with subs in "MOST" cases. They "may" have subs for some things, but not for
components like that. What an assinine answer. Basically, all it says is
stock number such and such, price, in stock or out. They CAN pull up some
manuals to show parts used, but they do NOT list subs. That system can't
tell you jack **** when it comes to subbing parts.

As to your display, may be a bad solder joint - as you suspect. Check it
before spending cash for the display - unless of course you just want to go
ahead and buy one as a spare. As to the Smeter, is the bulb on the order of
a wheat lamp or does it look like a fuse? I haven't looked the radio up to
know, but I'm betting its a wheat style lamp with leads. Those are available
at the shack in their parts bins. About 99 cents for a pack of 2 if I
recall.

As I said, don't count on them to help. Most don't know their ass from a
hole in the ground. They wouldn't know a resistor from a Diode to start
with, so they sure in hell couldn't help with a Sub. There are some stores
which have some who know - but not many. Of the 5 stores I've been to and
all their workers, I've only found 3 people who knew anything about
electronics. Sure makes ya wonder why the Board of Directors allowed them to
take on the slogan "You've got questions, we've got answers". You can't
possibly have answers when the majority of your employees aren't
electronically inclined. What is funny, is I'll make up a list with stock
numbers to give to my g/f to take to the shack and they'll question her as
to whether she's buying the right parts! How the hell would they know - they
have no clue what I'm using them for. IF they were electronically inclined,
they probably wouldn't be working there - anyway! The store couldn't afford
to keep them.

I don't think it matters much anymore anyway, I've seen where their
components are selling for 50% off. Must be trying to rid the stores of them
once and for all.

I don't get asked too often about the cell phone. Of course, I usually have
mine on my belt in open view. I do it on purpose - just so I WON'T hear it.

Well, it's the best answer the guy could give. It's certainly better
to say `I don't know' then to guess (unless it's an educated guess, in
which case it's ok as long as you make it clear that this `answer' is
an educated guess.)

The salesmen at RS are salesmen. If they pick up anything about
electronics, it's a bonus, but ultimately their job is sales, not
electronics. I'll bet most of RS's profits come from cell phones now
-- the rack of electrical components is probably still there only
because it's always been there. And maybe it's mere presence makes
them seem more knowledgable about cell phones and monster cables.

And if the salesman did end up learning a lot about electronics, he'd
get another job that actually put that knowledge to use. Wouldn't
you?

I've always taken that slogan to be less literal.

Question:"How can I save a large program, it won't fit on a floppy disc?"
Answer:"You can buy one of these CDRW drives and put it in your computer."

Question: "How can I communicate with my family when we are in a crowd?"
Answer: "There are various options. You can buy one of these CB sets, or you
can buy one of these FRS sets, or there are allways cellphones."

In other words, the questions will be about the products, or useage, and
the answers are the products to solve those questions.

It is just a marketing slogan. And for most of the population,
those are the answers they want.

I think I pretty much said the same thing! They'd never earn the money
they're worth if they had such an education.

Slogans can bring in business or chase away business. It helps if it
"applies" to the situation. IN this case, it doesn't.
Bad judgment on their behalf. Bad advertising, because they're advertising
service that they can't provide in many respects.
Yes, they can sell Cell Phones and so on, but if someone goes in with an
"ELECTRONICS" question which in most cases they're not qualified to answer
then HOW are they able to carry out the "You've got questions, we've got
answers"?
It just doesn't wash in the big picture.

Electronics "components" questions may be rare, but the rest is not.......
I'm not going to drag it out any more.

To me, it doesn't matter, I'm versed enough to shop for myself, but I've
seen many be given very poor advice. THAT is what burns me. I'm not going to
stick my nose in, that is up to them to clear up - not me. I'm not paid to
sell their products.

I buy parts in there also, what does that have to do with asking me every
trip for a cell phone? I respectfully disagree. That makes no sense. IF they
see you WITH a phone, then they should not bother - regardless if you're
there once a week or once a month. By now, most who shop there know they can
get a phone without having to have one shoved up your ass.
